Producers for the former "Grey's Anatomy" star's new indie film, "Jenny's Wedding," have turned to crowdfunding in an effort to raise enough money to complete post-production.
Heigl portrays the title character -- who shocks her traditional parents (Tom Wilkinson, Linda Emond) when she decides to marry a woman.
"The Newsroom" actress Grace Gummer, daughter of Meryl Streep, also stars.
The film was written and directed by Mary Agnes Donoghue, known primarily for her screenplays for female-driven dramas such as 1988's "Beaches" and 2002's "White Oleander."
Shot in November, the filmmakers are now asking for the public's help, partnering up with the San Francisco-based crowdfunding site  Indiegogo.
The producers have set a goal of reaching $150,000 in donations by March 28. Unlike other crowd funding campaigns, such as those undertaken by the likes ofSpike Lee on Kickstarter, the "Jenny's Wedding" filmmakers will be able to keep all donations even if the goal isn't reached.
Donors can receive varied gifts, depending on the amount of money contributed to the campaign. A $10 donation will allow access to post a message on the film's Facebook page. A "Jenny's Wedding" coffee mug comes with a $40 donation. For $15,000, a donor can own the actual wedding dress worn by Heigl in the film.
Heigl helped spread the word Wednesday on her Twitter account:
